While much of the current discourse around AI ethics is driven by secular academic and corporate institutions, a parallel and increasingly influential movement is emerging: faith-based AI. This perspective insists that ethical guidance must go beyond code, drawing on centuries-old moral traditions and spiritual insights.

The Rise of Faith-Based AI
Faith-based AI seeks to incorporate theological and spiritual values into the design and governance of intelligent systems. Rooted in religious ethics, this approach doesn’t simply aim to prevent harm or avoid bias; it aspires to foster human dignity, community well-being, and spiritual flourishing.

This movement has gained traction in part due to concerns that secular AI frameworks often reduce ethics to utilitarian calculations or abstract principles that may ignore deeper human values. Faith-based thinkers argue that without grounding in a transcendent moral order, AI risks becoming a tool of power, devoid of conscience or compassion.

Vatican Ethics and Technological Stewardship
One of the most vocal advocates for faith-driven technological ethics has been the Vatican. Under Pope Francis, the Catholic Church has made AI morality a significant part of its social teachings. In 2020, the Vatican launched the “Rome Call for AI Ethics,” a pledge signed by leaders from Microsoft, IBM, and major academic institutions, committing to the ethical development of AI based on principles such as transparency, inclusion, accountability, and the protection of human rights.

This initiative reflects a broader Vatican ethics framework that sees AI not merely as a neutral tool but as a mirror of human intention. For the Church, technological progress must align with the common good and the integral development of the human person.

Carlo Theology Tech: A Saintly Vision for AI?
The beatification of Carlo Acutis—a tech-savvy teenager often dubbed the “patron saint of the internet”—has also galvanized interest in the intersection of theology and technology. Known for his deep faith and skill in building websites to promote Eucharistic miracles, Carlo’s legacy has inspired a new generation to think about how digital tools can serve divine purposes.

This emerging field, informally dubbed Carlo theology tech, emphasizes the sanctification of digital spaces. It raises challenging questions: Can machine learning models reflect not just statistical accuracy, but divine compassion? Can AI serve as a tool for evangelization, or even spiritual formation? While still in its infancy, this line of thought invites developers and theologians alike to imagine how sacred values might be encoded into the architectures of intelligent systems.

AI Morality: Beyond Ethics as Usual
Secular frameworks often focus on AI safety, fairness, and regulation. But faith-based AI insists that morality isn’t just about what machines should not do—it’s about what kind of society we are building with these machines. It demands a holistic view of AI that incorporates wisdom traditions, moral virtues, and long-term spiritual impact.

For example, questions of AI morality become deeply complex when considering autonomous weapons or AI-generated content that shapes belief systems. Faith traditions—particularly those with a robust anthropology and theology of the soul—can offer a counterweight to purely materialist views of intelligence, autonomy, and personhood.

The Road Ahead
Integrating faith and technology is no easy task. There are risks of dogmatism, exclusion, or naive optimism. However, ignoring the moral resources of faith traditions may leave AI development spiritually impoverished and ethically shortsighted.

Whether one is a believer or not, the contributions of Vatican ethics, the inspiration of figures like Carlo Acutis, and the growing conversation around faith-based AI provide vital perspectives in an increasingly automated world. They challenge technologists and ethicists alike to ask not just “Can we build it?” but “Should we—and why?”

As machine learning continues to advance, the call for AI morality must extend beyond the codebase, into the very soul of what it means to be human.

As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to shape every facet of modern life—from healthcare to finance to warfare—the moral questions surrounding its development and deployment grow ever more urgent.
